The Bono Region is witnessing a significant milestone in its quest to unlock the full potential of cashew production. The Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, recently announced a major breakthrough resulting from a collaborative initiative with the Sunyani Technical University (STU).

The university, under the leadership of Dr. Afia Sakyiwaa from the Department of Hospitality and Tourism, was tasked by the Minister to explore innovative ways to add value to cashew apples. During a visit to the Minister’s office on May 2, 2025, the research team presented their findings, which include the development of novel products such as cashew bread and a healthier cashew-based drink. These innovations are expected to diversify the cashew value chain and create new market opportunities.

This advancement aligns with the Regional Minister’s broader vision of economic transformation through industrialization and job creation. Acknowledging the efforts of the STU team, the Minister commended the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Adinkrah Appiah, and his management team for their swift and dedicated response to the call.

As part of the region’s industrial agenda, Hon. Akwaboa said plans are underway to establish four cashew processing factories across key cashew-producing districts. He continued that the initiative has already attracted investment interest, with a major Chinese investor onboard and advanced discussions ongoing with a prospective American investor. Additionally, the project is set to benefit from substantial support under the Government’s flagship Adwumawura Programme, which promotes economic development through innovation and entrepreneurship. This aligns with former President John Dramani Mahama’s broader national development agenda.

Hon. Akwaboa again said the initiative is expected to create a ripple effect across the region—enhancing the livelihoods of cashew farmers, generating decent employment for young people, and boosting the regional economy. Communities such as Nkrankwanta, Sampa, Suma, Wenchi, and Odumasi stand to benefit significantly from this transformative project.

Dr. Afia Sakyiwaa, Prof. Ing. Kwadwo Adinkrah Appiah, and the STU research team were widely praised by the Hon. Minister for their exemplary work in spearheading this innovative leap in cashew value addition.

The Bono Region now looks poised to harness the full potential of its cashew industry in the drive toward sustainable economic growth.
