The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on the Prisons Service to ensure inmates are held securely while upholding their fundamental human rights and dignity. The commission emphasized the importance of not just incarceration, but also the effective reformation and reintegration of inmates into society.

Mr. Peter Kwabena Gyasi, Deputy Bono Regional Director of the NCCE, delivered this message during an engagement in Sunyani organized for the Bono Regional Prisons Command. The event was part of the 2025 Constitution Week Celebration, observed under the theme: “Ghana’s future: Our collective responsibility.”

According to Mr. Gyasi, the Prisons Service has a critical role to play in rehabilitation efforts by equipping inmates with employable skills, vocational training, and moral education.

He also encouraged security agencies to stand firm against societal vices that obstruct national progress and to contribute positively to national discourse by offering “caveat to the government on issues of national interest.”

Mr. Gyasi further stated that national development cannot rest solely on the government. He highlighted the need for collective participation from all sectors, including security personnel, to drive inclusive development.

He underscored that Ghana’s advancement depends on economic, social, and cultural cooperation, stressing that unity in diversity is essential for comprehensive and accelerated progress.

“Our vision for the nation can be realized only when citizens remain law abiding, protect public property, safeguard the environment, uphold justice, and promote peaceful coexistence”, Mr. Gyasi stated.

“These values form the moral and social foundation required to secure the nation’s long-term development and prosperity”, he added.
