2025 BECE KICKS OFF IN BONO REGION WITH MORE FEMALE CANDIDATES

More girls than boys are taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the Bono Region, according to statistics from the Bono Regional Directorate of Education.
At a press briefing held in Sunyani, Mr. Luke Mensah, Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the region, announced that a total of 24,109 candidates are sitting for this year’s BECE. Of this number, 12,345 are girls, while 11,774 are boys, signaling a promising trend in gender parity and even a slight lead for girls in basic education.
These candidates come from 805 Junior High Schools, 243 public and 562 private institutions. The exams are being administered across 84 designated centers in the region, overseen by 95 supervisors and 802 invigilators.

Mr. Mensah also noted a slight discrepancy with the West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) registered figure of 24,170 candidates. He explained that this is due to additional entries from non-traditional learning environments such as bolter homes, prisons, and candidates from the Complementary Education Agency.
He concluded by urging all candidates to strictly adhere to the rules and regulations guiding the examination process. Any acts of malpractice, he warned, could result in the withholding or outright cancellation of results.
This shift in gender dynamics is not only noteworthy but also reflects growing efforts to bridge the education gap between boys and girls in the region.
