BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH – BONO RCC HOLD BREAST CANCER SENSITIZATION DURBAR FOR STAFF
The Management of the Bono Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in collaboration with Banhart Hospital organized Breast Cancer education and sensitization durbar for the staff of RCC as part of breast cancer awareness month.
The durbar which was aimed at educating the staff on Breast Cancer took place at the Conference Room of the RCC in Sunyani on 30th October 2024.
The durbar was facilitated by Officials from Banhart Hospital. The facilitators were Ms. Yarso Ophelia Twenewaa, (Nurse), Mr. John Baptist Kaboban (Administrator), Ms. Timah Shully Yeboah, (Midwife).
Ms. Theresah Adjei-Mensah, an Assistant Director I at the RCC, on behalf of the Honourable Regional Minister, Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, briefly welcomed the facilitators and staff present at the durbar and asked for maximum cooperation to ensure a successful durbar.
She also emphasized the need to have this sensitization since the month of October is considered Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Ms. Ophelia, in her opening remarks thanked the Management and staff for given such opportunity to educate and create awareness on Breast Cancer.
She said October being considered as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, there is the need to educate and create awareness of Breast Cancer. She explained what Breast Cancer is and how it affects women and men. She said in general women are more prone to Breast Cancer than men.
She mentioned that there is no specific cause of Breast Cancer though there are risk factors and lifestyles such as smoking, eating unhealthy foods, Obesity etc. which can contribute to Breast Cancer.
Ms. Timah continued the presentation and took the staff through Breast examination and how women can examine their own breast at home.
She advised that women from age 20-35 must examine their Breast once a month after menstruation to know if there are changes in their breast.
She also said that women who are 40 years and above should visit the hospital for mammogram once every year to check if there no problem with the breast.
She advised that, when there is an unusual change in the breast one should quickly seek medical assistant emphasizing that early detection and treatment of Breast Cancer saves life.
After her brief presentation staff were given the opportunity to ask questions and contribute to the topic.
Ms. Theresah Adjei Mensah thanked all the staff present and the officials from Banhart Hospital for making the durbar a success.
She also advised that women should take advantage and examine their breast when necessary to see if there is no problem or better still seek the services of health professional to examine it.
