BONO REGIONAL MINISTER ENGAGES TIMBER INDUSTRY STAKEHOLDERS ON FOREST PROTECTION AND LEGAL COMPLIANCE

On Tuesday, 13th May 2025, the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, convened a critical meeting with the leadership and members of Registered Timber Companies and the Forestry Commission. This followed an earlier engagement with Lumber Dealers and Table Saw Millers held on Monday.
The meeting aimed to reinforce the regional administration’s commitment to protecting forest lands while ensuring that timber-related businesses operate within the bounds of the law and contribute fairly to national revenue.
Striking this balance, officials emphasized, is essential for both environmental sustainability and equitable income distribution within the wood industry.
During the discussions, timber contractors raised concerns about the growing threat posed by illegal chainsaw operators. These individuals, often armed, were reported to be encroaching on legally designated concessions, creating security risks and undermining forest conservation efforts.

In response, the Regional Minister assured stakeholders that a comprehensive strategy would soon be rolled out to combat these illegal activities, as well as to address the issue of armed herdsmen grazing in forested areas.
The Minister also encouraged timber contractors to prioritize the needs of the local market by supporting local lumber dealers and table saw millers. Contractors were further advised to work through authorized security channels when addressing safety concerns in their operational zones.
As part of broader efforts to streamline the timber industry and support local businesses, the government announced plans to construct a dedicated timber market in the region.
Hon. Akwaboa reiterated his commitment to sustainable forest management and inclusive economic development, with the ultimate goal of securing a prosperous and environmentally responsible future for the region.
