BONO REGIONAL MINISTER CALLS FOR ETHICAL JOURNALISM AT 2026 WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY CELEBRATION
The Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, has emphasized the need for responsible journalism and professional conduct among media practitioners as part of efforts to strengthen press freedom and promote peaceful coexistence.
He made the remarks during the Bono Regional commemoration of the 2026 World Press Freedom Day held on 8th May 2026 in Sunyani. The event was organized by the Bono Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association under the theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: The Role of the Youth and Media in Building Peaceful Societies.”
Addressing participants at the event, Hon. Akwaboa noted that while Ghana’s 1992 Constitution guarantees freedom of the press, the exercise of that freedom must be guided by professionalism, accuracy, integrity, and a commitment to national peace and development.
He encouraged journalists and media organizations to contribute positively to social cohesion by combating misinformation, promoting civic responsibility, and giving attention to issues that foster unity within society. According to him, unethical reporting practices and the misuse of digital media platforms continue to pose risks to national security and social harmony.
The Minister further urged media practitioners to use their platforms constructively to support national development and avoid content that could create divisions within communities.
Hon. Akwaboa also reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding media freedom through initiatives such as the reactivation of the Media Development Fund, ongoing media reforms, support for community media outlets, and investments in training and digital literacy programs. He additionally condemned intimidation and violence against journalists, describing the media as an important partner in national development.
At the same time, he stressed that media freedom should be accompanied by responsible and ethical practice, emphasizing the important role journalists play in sustaining democracy and peace.
The Regional Minister further assured participants of continued collaboration between the Regional Coordinating Council, the media, civil society organizations, and development partners to promote a conducive environment for journalism and maintain peace within the Bono Region.
The event was attended by former Deputy Attorney-General Mr. Alfred Tuah-Yeboah, Nana Kwaku Kumi, Bono Regional Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), members of the media, and traditional leaders.
