The Centre for Crops Research Institute (CRI) from Kumasi visited the Sunyani Municipal Department of Agriculture as part of its research activity to pick samples of the indigenous Taro, locally called Kooko.

According to the Crop Research Institute, it has noticed that the indigenous variety of Taro was disappearing from the country and as part of their mandate to ensure high and sustainable crop productivity and food security through the development and dissemination of improved technologies, three (3) regions (Ashanti, Ahafo and Bono) were selected for samples to be collected.

Five (5) communities in the Sunyani Municipality were visited, that is, Yeboahkrom, Atronie, Mahamakrom, Atuahenekrom, and Sunyani Tonsuom. The Research team conducted a scouting exercise and various kinds of indigenous Taro varieties were found.

The objective is to develop and multiply the samples for the communities to plant.
