As a key component of Ghana’s national “BIG PUSH” infrastructure initiative, the Sunyani Outer Ring Road project, Lot 1 is now underway. Spanning 17 kilometres and the development is being carried out by the Bono Region Department of Urban Roads under the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

This project forms a critical component of Sunyani’s urban transport framework. Together with the existing Inner Ring Road, the Outer Ring Road, Lot 1 section is intended to establish a comprehensive ring road system aimed at easing traffic congestion within the Central Business District (CBD), improving traffic flow, and enhancing overall urban accessibility.

Progress on the project is reported to be on track as of the end of July 2026. The appointed contractor, M/S Kofi Job Company Limited, has mobilized fully to the site. Initial design work is complete, with early working drawings already released to allow preliminary activities to proceed. Site clearance has been finished, and establishment of the site camp, equipment deployment, and staffing are all advancing according to schedule.

Earthworks are currently underway, with particular attention given to the treatment of swampy and unsuitable ground conditions. These activities include the placement and compaction of boulders in weak sections, filling of unsuitable areas, and construction works at culvert approaches. Concrete works for selected box and pipe culverts have also commenced at various locations along the corridor

An important technical proposal has arisen from early reviews: to develop the service lanes first while reserving the main carriageway space within the median for future road expansion. This approach is intended to safeguard the project’s Right of Way (RoW) and mitigate the risk of future encroachment by adjoining property owners along this section of the Outer Ring Road corridor.

Other significant aspects of the project are also in progress. Ongoing engagements with stakeholders, and preparations for quality assurance. The contractor has submitted key technical documentation, including the Programme of Works, concrete mix designs, and laboratory test results for natural gravel materials intended for filling. These submissions have been reviewed and approved by the appropriate authorities at Head Office.

The contractor is fully on site working steadily, but other foundational activities, including design finalization and stakeholder coordination are still on-going. Continued attention to design optimization, utility coordination, and compensation processes will be essential to maintain schedule integrity and avoid future disruptions.
Although the contractor remains fully engaged on site and construction activities are progressing steadily, certain critical processes-particularly the finalization of designs and continued stakeholder coordination-are still in progress. Moving forward, maintaining focus on design optimization, effective utility management, and timely compensation procedures will be necessary to ensure adherence to the project schedule and to prevent potential delays in the future.
