The Bono Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) on 22nd June 2026 hosted a training and stakeholder consultation workshop aimed at promoting the integration of energy efficiency as a mandatory requirement in Ghana’s building practices and permit approval system.

The workshop, held at the Conference Room of the Bono RCC, was organized by the Energy Commission in collaboration with the Office of the Head of Local Government Service. It brought together Physical Planning Officers and Works Engineers from Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the Bono Region.

The initiative forms part of ongoing national efforts to strengthen sustainable building practices and ensure that energy efficiency considerations are incorporated into the planning, design, construction, permitting, and inspection of buildings throughout the country.

Participants were taken through key policy frameworks, regulatory requirements, and practical approaches for integrating energy-efficient measures into building development processes. Discussions also focused on the important role of local authorities in advancing Ghana’s energy efficiency agenda.

As the primary institutions responsible for building permit approvals, inspections, and enforcement, MMDAs play a crucial role in translating national energy efficiency policies into practical outcomes at the local level. Their involvement is essential to ensuring that buildings meet established standards that promote energy conservation, reduce operational costs, and contribute to environmental sustainability.

The training workshop sought to enhance the capacity of MMDA officials by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively apply energy-efficient principles in their daily operations. It also served as a platform for stakeholder engagement and consultation on strategies to improve implementation and compliance across the country.

Furthermore, the workshop emphasized the need for stronger collaboration between national regulatory institutions and local authorities to ensure consistent enforcement of energy efficiency standards. Participants engaged in discussions on challenges facing implementation and explored practical solutions to strengthen coordination and compliance mechanisms.

The programme reflects the commitment of the Energy Commission and its partners to building a more sustainable and energy-conscious construction sector in Ghana, while supporting local governments to play a leading role in achieving national energy efficiency objectives.
