The New Dormaa-Yawhima Road Project is part of Government’s critical roads flagship programme to rehabilitate critical roads in the regions and fulfills a promise by His Excellency the president to the people of the Bono region to continue the dualization of the Sunyani – Techiman road. The road is critical

arterial in the management of traffic in the Sunyani municipality. The road is the only route to Techiman and Wenchi from Sunyani.

Selected roads around the Bono Regional Coordinating Council and the Sunyani Estates are also part of this project.

The project intends to increase capacity by converting the New Dormaa-Yawhima single carriageway into a 2-lane dual carriageway.

The Sunyani-Techiman Road (New Dormaa-Yawhema road) serves important places such as the Bono Regional Hospital, Sunyani Nursing and Midwifery Training school, 3BN military barracks, schools, markets and other commercial facilities.

The scope of works include; Drainage Works, Earthworks, Pavement Works (Dual carriageway), Surfacing, Median, Laybys.

The contractor has constructed about 16.5km of both 0.6m and 0.9m U drains, 4no. pipe culverts and laid about 10km of median kerbs. He has also completed 10km of subbase and base and 5km length of primer seal and seal works on the New Dormaa-Yawhima road.

In addition, the contractor has also done 2.1km and 1.6km length of subbase, base primer seal works on the Estate and Bono Regional Coordinating Council enclave respectively. The contractor has done seal works on the Estate rods as well.

Physical and financial progress stand at 70% and 55% respectively. The contractor request for extension of time submitted to the Head office has been approved. Currently the contractor is on site undertaking the outstanding drainage and gravel works.

A major challenge on the project is that the traffic volume on the New Dormaa -Yawhima road is high. We suggest an asphaltic overlay is carried out once this project is complete to preserve the road.
