UENR ATHLETES DOMINATE THE 2023 BONO REGIONAL CROSS COUNTRY
Samuel Oduro and Abotenkemah Nina all from the University of Energy and Natural Resources – UENR in Sunyani emerged winners in the male and female categories of the 2023 Bono Regional Cross-Country with times of 32minutes 7seconds and 42minutes 42seconds respectively.
The event was held at the Coronation Park, Sunyani with athletes from all over the region competing to be part of the team which would represent the Bono Region at the 2023 National Cross Country to be held in Savelugu in the Northern Region come February 23rd to 26th.
The Bono Cross Country saw the introduction of a modern style of cross-country race known as “the Loop Style” with obstacles mounted on the pitch for the athletes. The total distance covered by the athletes was 10.5 kilometers.
The second and third positions for the male category were occupied by Haruna Gyibril and Abel Aselise who covered the 10.5-kilometer race under 33mins 55secs and 35mins 22secs in turn.
In the female category, Soapa Selina emerged second with a time of 45mins 24secs followed closely by Kyei Nyarko Daniella who finished third with 45mins 51secs.
Presenting his speech, the Municipal Chief Executive for Sunyani Municipal Assembly, Honorable Ansu Kumi who graced the event mentioned that, the municipal assembly has a keen eye on sports and it is very much interested in the development of sportsmen and women within the municipality and the entire region.
He congratulated the winners and encouraged the rest of the athletes to keep their heads high and train harder to excel in subsequent events.
It is our hope and prayer as an assembly to see a lot of these young athletes grow to become National and International Champions in the future.”, he added.
The Mr. Foster Kwame Opoku Boakye, Bono Regional Sports Director in his delivery applauded the athletes for participating in the event especially to the young athletes.
He mentioned that, the National Sports Authority, Bono Region has launched a campaign dubbed “CATCH THEM YOUNG” which seeks to develop young talents from the ages of 8; therefore, he is very much excited to see a lot of fresh athletes competing at this level.
Mr. Opoku Boakye expressed his gratitude to the officiating officials, NSA staff and all individuals who contributed to the successful run of the event. He reserved a special thanks for the media in Bono region for availing their stations to be used in promoting the event.
